5. Match the tone and pace of their talking and share their energy level. If they are speaking softly, speak softly. If they are enthusiastic, ask your questions enthusiastically.

There are many times when we feel we have way too much to do. We know there are things going on in all areas of our lives that need attention; however, we are so busy in one area that the other parts of our lives tend to get left out. It is time we understood we can’t get everything done. We can’t do all things for everyone. We have to draw the line somewhere so that we aren’t feeling so overwhelmed that we just collapse.

We should spend time with Him and seek out what His will is for us by taking actions He gives us to do through opportunities He places before us. Excessive carbohydrates. If there is a history in your family of mood disorders, alcoholism, or depressive symptoms, your child may need a high-protein diet. Along with being a better, more stable energy source, a high-protein diet will also help a child who struggles with obesity. And it will feed his brain.
This is more challenging than it ought to be, because the American diet -- especially for kids -- is so skewed toward empty calories. Too many of the foods favored by kids have too much carbohydrate and sugar but not enough protein and far too few good fats (especially EFAs) and micronutrients.
Just as there are foods that you should promote in abundance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are other foods that you should work to keep out of your child's diet.
Dairy products. Limit dairy intake to three to five servings per week, especially in small children. I recommend this because dairy-based foods are the number one cause of food allergies in children, and kids with food allergies often exhibit behavioral problems. If your child tolerates milk, I recommend buying only organic milk to avoid the hormones routinely fed to cows. If your toddler seems to tolerate dairy well, there's no need to switch him to rice or soy products. Feeding our children well requires effort, but it isn't complicated. The results will be well worth the effort. Here are the basics.
Ensure that your child is well hydrated and drinks plenty of water every day. This may seem like a no-brainer, but even slight dehydration makes the effective absorption of all other nutrients impossible.
Make sure that your child gets enough protein. Unlike carbohydrates, protein is a steady, slow-release form of energy. I recommend eating two servings a day of chicken, fish, tofu, eggs, or meat.
Emphasize good oils. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated oils such as olive oil and canola oil are good choices. Use butter instead of margarine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though in moderation. Reduce your use of corn oil and safflower oil if possible.
Feature cold-water fish, such as salmon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cod, and herring. Ideally, every child should have a minimum of two or three servings a week of fresh fish.
Include nuts and seeds. A rich assortment of raw nuts and seeds is best. Put them in salads, cereals, and casseroles. They're also great as snacks.

Include plenty of fresh fruits, particularly those currently in season.

Over the years, parents have asked me to provide a quick overview of the basic dietary guidelines they should follow with their children in order to promote optimal brain health and development, which also means optimal overall growth and development.

Once a child moves beyond breastfeeding, it's up to us parents to take on the awesome responsibility of navigating our way through a pretty lousy American diet and nourishing our kids in ways that help -- not hinder -- their growing bodies and brains.
It's our job,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then, to make sure that our kids aren't poisoned or sickened by diets that are aggressively high in sugar and high in saturated fat but low in protein, vitamins, minerals, and essential trace elements. We need to resist the urge to let marketing efforts (especially those of the fast-food industry) lure us into giving our kids the wrong kind of nutrition. Instead, we have to dedicate ourselves to feeding them adequate amounts of the six key nutrients.
Refined sugar. This means candy, cakes, and even juices . Occasional treats are okay, but they shouldn't be part of a child's daily diet. Watch out for drinks (including fruit juices labeled 100% natural), as they often contain enormous amounts of sugar.

It is one of the most often asked questions in ballet, yet one to which there has not really been one definitive answer; “How do I know when I (or one of my students) am ready for pointe work?” Young girls dream of their first pair of pointe shoes for years before they will be allowed to get into them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and, until now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it has basically been up to the teacher to decide when each student makes the transition.
The question as to when a ballet dancer is strong enough to go onto pointe has always been a contentious one. Dance Physical Therapist Lisa Howell (B.Phty) has perfected a fantastic system that takes the guesswork out of this difficult decision. Dancers work through a series of tests and exercises specially developed to prepare their feet, ankles, hips and core muscles for pointe work,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the system is being embraced by dance teachers all over the globe.
In Australia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], many dance teachers have realised the importance of getting each girl individually assessed prior to going onto pointe. The ‘best dancer’ within a class may not necessarily have the strongest feet, and many weaknesses can be hidden inside regular ballet slippers. They advise each girl to undertake an assessment with a Special Dance Physical Therapist, who will perform screening tests that take much of the responsibility off the dance teacher in deciding who is able to go onto pointe and when. Following an initial assessment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], special strengthening and mobility exercises are taught to strengthen any weaknesses in the dancer’s feet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ankles, hips and core muscles, to help the girls cope with the demands of pointe work.
As there is a limited number of dancers a therapist can see day to day, and due to the enormous global interest in Ballet, a program was developed that made this process available to the world. It is based around 4 stages,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], each with clearly described tests to assess each girl’s current strength and mobility, explanations of what any weaknesses may mean, and programs of specific exercises to help improve all the highlighted areas.
Once a girl can correctly perform all of the tests in each stage (each has a check-list to ensure that they are performed correctly) she should be strong enough to commence pointe work under the guidance of a qualified teacher. All of the tests and exercises are clearly demonstrated with clear photographs of both the correct and incorrect positions.
A Dance Physical Therapist will see hundreds of girls each year for such assessments. The teachers find the resulting written reports on each girl extremely helpful for tailoring corrections in class, and all note the dramatic improvement in the girls overall approach to dance, both technically, and energetically, once they have their assessment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and have specific goals to work towards.
