This past year I had the privilege to help a couple of homeschool families with some homeschooling. Although, for the most part, I enjoyed the experience one thing I did not enjoy was the students use the lack of personal development, lack of spirit of excellence and the amount of excuses.
Then, the parents started making up excuses. We stayed up late and they overslept. Oh, I forgot to see if he had all his stuff. Oh, we went to the movies so he could not do his work. Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they are homeschool they are not used to this. WHAT? I do not give a fig that they are homeschool. You mean they can’t get a paper and pencil into a backpack and come to school. That is a huge big excuse.
They would come in late and say I overslept because my alarm did not go off. They would come in without supplies and ask around, disrupting the class and explain that again they forgot pencil or paper. They never were prepared for the lesson because there was always and excuse as to why they could not get the assignments done. I kept thinking to myself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wow. How are these kids ever going to get things done in life if everything is an excuse?
Regrettably,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we have passed on the legacy to our children that say excuses are okay. We make them ourselves and our children bear witness. Then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we wonder why they tell us excuse after excuse as to why they can’t or Won’t do what needs to be done.

To take total personal responsibility is something most people just cannot or will not do. We have been led to believe that excuses, good excuses, really do exist. That is not true in fact nothing could be further from the truth.

It was evident to me then that this was not where I want to be. To me education is more than learning our ABC’s. It is learning about personal development. Teaching our children how to take responsibility is one of the greatest gifts we can give them.
You see our students have a job. They are expected to go to school and learn. Students are expected to increase their knowledge. They are supposed to put information from eye and ear to brain and memory and absorb the information to the point that they can explain what they have learned.
We ourselves have made too many excuses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. People do not take personal responsibility for being late at an appointment they instead blame traffic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. We do not take personal responsibility when we are mean to our children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. We say they led us to it by behavior. We do not take personal responsibility for our weight when we go to the fast food place rather than feed our family a healthy meal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. We say it is more convenient. Those are all lies we are telling ourselves.
However, for most, excuses are a part of their lives. For most people, excuses are a belief system handed down from generation to generation and we now pass that bad habit to our children.
For many, taking personal responsibility for the events and occurrences in their lives is easy. These people are highly successful and only rely on excuses some of the times.
What is personal responsibility? It sounds like a dumb question right. Don’t people know what personal responsibility is? Nevertheless, even though most people know what personal responsibility is, most people have a difficult time taking responsibility for their lives.

When our world is significantly changing through the divorce process our emotions can change very rapidly. The rapid changes mean that the hormones are in our systems all at once - which serves up a very potent cocktail for our brains. Our brains aren't used to having this potent hormonal cocktail and we can act, think, and behave in ways we never would have believed before.
What do I wish I could have told Pilar and Deion? Once you start your divorce process, please don't try to live in the same home. You and your kids will be much, much happier if you both start to create your independent lives.
Your Functional Divorce Assignment:
The thing is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your spouse has been doing the same thing. They've been picking their battles too. They've also swept stuff under the rug.
The big mistake they made,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that could have prevented many of the problems they've had and forced the networks to report on some other bits of news,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is that they decided to continue living in the same house after deciding to divorce.
The anger that you can feel during divorce can probably more accurately be called rage. It can cause you to lash out in ways you never would have thought you were capable.
What do I want to make sure you learn,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from their example? Once you and your spouse have made the decision to divorce,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], remember that it will be stressful and that it's in your best interest to start creating your independent life with as much respect for each other as possible.
When you decide to start the divorce process, something switches inside. What switches is that we start experiencing all kinds of emotions. We might progress from denial,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to anger, to hope and back again to denial, to anger, to more anger and then maybe some hope. Every time we hit anger, there's a part of us that doesn't feel the need to hold back any longer. After all, we're getting divorced,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], right? So why not tell them all the stuff we've put up with for YEARS! Heck,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we deserve to have our way! Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this is exactly how things can get out of hand in a heartbeat. Because once one of you starts spewing forth all the stuff that's been swept under the rug, the other will most likely return the favor and it just gets uglier from there.
So getting back to Pilar and Deion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], choosing to live in the same house while beginning the divorce process means that the "reason" for their anger is always near. When their anger strikes, it's very, very easy to race from anger to rage and then the most unbelievable behavior occurs, the public accusations fly and the press makes sure we know all about it.
Granted it would seem that a 29,000 sq foot home would provide plenty of separation for the couple. It didn't. That's because they hadn't counted on divorce anger.
While we're married,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we all pick our battles. There are some things that are worth talking about and working out and there are some things that we just choose not to deal with. By not dealing with it we sweep it under the rug.

Remember that you're both going through a stressful transition. This is where compassion for everyone involved can go a long way.
